Artifacts are a type of items. Functionally, artifacts are used in the same way as charged items such as gems and wands. Similar to gems and wands, artifacts confer spells to the user and contain a limited amount of charges. The main differences from charged charged items is that artifacts are equipped in a different slot and artifact-derived spells have top priority in terms of the sequence in which spells are cast, different from the sequence priority of readied charged items and other spells.
Spells cast by charged items do not benefit from the hero's INT attribute. For this reason, charged items have limited effectiveness against opponents with high magic resistance. This deficiency is somewhat mitigated in the case of the Desert Artifact, whose spell has a high spell level.
