- This is a strategy article. For general class information, see Warrior of Discord.
With high vitality, weapon damage, and hand-to-hand proficiency, as well as the critical hit, poison immunity, and attack multiple foes abilities, the Warrior of Discord is extremely strong in all stages of the game. The Warrior of Discord also has the Howl of Discord, a special attack that cannot be resisted, and can be used even when the hero is paralyzed. Since the damage of the howl increases with level, a high level Warrior of Discord is able to do impressive damage with the alone howl. With all of the advantages listed above, the Warrior of Discord's overall damage output typically exceed that of any other melee class in most situations.
Despite having poor defense stats, the Warrior of Discord has little to fear for several reasons. First, the Warrior of Discord's offense is so impressive that opponents typically do not last long. Second, unlike Barbarians who wear almost no armor, the Warrior of Discord does have a capable armor selection. Third, the amazingly high vitality gives the Warrior of Discord an extreme amount of durability necessary to finish off large groups of opponents and to efficiently utilize the Total Restoration Tincture. Since the Total Restoration Tincture restores the hero's entire health pool, in the late game, Warriors of Discord can simply out-healing any incoming damage, regardless of defense.
In summary, the Warrior of Discord is easily among the most powerful classes throughout all stages of the game. The only true weakness is against monsters that can incapacitate through Paralysis, Tangle, or other mechanisms. These monsters can sometimes catch the player off guard.
Getting started[]
The Warrior of Discord can start simply by buying a 100 gold weapon and a 100 gold armor from the blacksmith. The goal of the beginning phase is to accumulate enough money, while level, to buy a full set of gear before heading to Venn's Spire. This includes the best weapons and armor available from the city blacksmith, both enchanted to +3 at the local Wizards Guild, and well as the Ring of Protection.
Note that the Warrior of Discord is initially unable to learn spells due to low Intelligence. Therefore, it is worthwhile to train intelligence to 11 or 12 (at the library), so that the FireShield spell can be purchased from the library. Training intelligence (and obtaining FireShield) can be done before or after going to Venn's Spire, as it is not essential to the class. Also, please note that the PowerShock spell is not beneficial for the Warrior of Discord. Casting this spell significantly reduces damage output as compared to the standard attack, which is enhanced by Attack Multiple Foes. If PowerShock is purchased, it can be disabled in the spells interface.
After completing the Trial of Venn's Spire, you may begin the typical mid game item hunt, beginning with the Green Charm (from the Magic Bazaar). A trip to the Elven Valley is useful to collect ingredients for the Blades of Fatality. The Fertile Plains, Hellfire Mountains South, and the Dark Forest serve as the bulk of the mid game.
Items[]
Below are the optimal items for each category, as well as other notable items important to this class. For a complete list of usable items, see items usable by Warrior of Discord.
- Weapon
- Blades of Mass Slaughtering (Damage: 25, Hand-to-hand +10, Critical Hit +1, Double Attack +30)[Thallis item]
- Early on, Blades of Fatality (Damage: 21, Hand-to-hand +15, Strength +15)
- Armor:
- Mithril Spiked Armor of Frenzy (Parry +5, Hand-to-hand +10, Magic Resist +5, Damage +4, Dodge -10)[Thallis item]
- Before entering Thallis, the best choice is likely the Ultra Chaos Armor, which has three slots to embed Beard Rings, preferably of the Goblin (for Strength), Shield (for Willpower), or Skull (for Magic Resist) types.
- Cloak
- Spiked Cloak (Damage +1, Critical Hit +2, Parry -5, Dodge -5)[Thallis item]
- Early on, Farmer's Cloak (Ranged +2, Dodge +2, Hand-to-hand +2, Parry +2) or Protective Cloak (Magic Resist +5)
- Headgear
- Circlet of Lycanthropy (H2H +15, Ranged +15, Parry +15, Dodge +15, Werewolf Form) → True Werewolf Circlet (Armor +1, MGR +10, H2H +15, Ranged +15, Parry +15, Dodge +15, Werewolf Form)
- Helm of Terror (Armor +1, Damage +2, MGR +10, Death Cry) → Helm of Horror (Armor +3, Damage +3, MGR +15, H2H +10, Parry +10, Death Cry) – The Helm of Horror and the True Werewolf Circle provide distinct sets of bonuses. Considering that Werewolf Form of the circlet is suppressed by a shapeshift-type portion, the Helm of Terror generally offers slightly better benefits. However, neither option is universally better than the other on all occasions.
- Early on, Bandanna of Frost or Battered Crown
- Belt
- Belt of Ravaging (Armor: 0, H2H +25, STR +32, Parry -15, Dodge -15, MGR -10) – Given the primacy of offense over defense for the Warrior of Discord, this belt is likely to be the best option in most situations that do not require maximal magic resist
- Belt of Pain (Armor: 2, Critical Hit +2, Damage +2, Parry +10, Magic Resist +5, Strength +8)[Thallis item] – A more defense-oriented alternative to the Belt of Ravaging due to the Magic Resist bonus
- Belt of Brawling socketed with a "Might" Accessory (for a total of Arm +1, H2H +20, PAR +5, STR +16, Dmg +1)
- Early on, Belt of Rage and Belt of Balance are useful
- Footwear
- War Chargers
- Boots of Lunord, when you need small MGR bonus
- Glove
- Chaos Gloves (Armor: 1, Damage +2, Double Attack +20, Parry -5, Magic Resist +10, Dodge -5, Hand-to-hand -5)[Thallis item]
- Early on, War Gauntlets (Armor: 2, Hand-to-hand +5, Parry +10, Strength +4) socketed with 2x Beard Rings
- Armband
- Mithril Studded Armband socketed with 2x Beard Rings, such as Goblin or Skull Beard Rings
- Mithril Bracers or Nevryl Bracers socketed with 2x Beard Rings, such as Hammer or Ratman Beard Rings
- Necklace
- Ring Amulet socketed with Ring of Protection or Dark Band
- MGR-boosting Necklaces, such as Blue Charm / Rezzenthells Spellkiller / Dwarven Locket are useful for MGR needs.
- Ring
- Accessory
